1-What are your feelings about yout last great project “Indigenous Soundwaves”?

Its a real joy seeing the process of ideas on topics such as social, environmental and cultural conversations become a solid project which has connected with people in ways we could have only hoped. i believe the feelings are gratefulness, adventure and happiness. Indigenous soundwaves has given us the opportunity to travel touring in various countries the last year and a half its been released, whilst making new friends. We feel indigenous soundwaves is a rooted journey in positivity.

2-Can you tell us about the musicians involved in the record?

Many of the producers and guest artists are friends or people we have had a long term connections with in previous projects. The intro of indigenous soundwaves has Amen Noir’s poetry, which we love, he writes so visually. He is a long time friend and a truly gifted poet and his wife (artist) Nyari features in our video dancing to Legacy too. Legacy was produced by Henry keen from an amazing group called Electric jalaba & also Sound Species. Our other friendships include samantha steel and Beat Thief who made the song Gallery Of Dreams from scratch and built the melody around sarinas vocals, this was an organic process we enjoyed. Our recent video release senses is produced by Kensaye who ironically Sarina went to University with and mohammed connected with before we all connected. Mohammeds friendship with London rapper Akala enabled a collab on Out of the Box and we both loved his powerful verse. Jacob Burge who produced Lightness of happiness with jack baldus on the keys also produced Out of the box, mother & Son and he is an award winning photographer too, luckily he photographed us for our first ever shoot before being in huge demand- (his website is www.snap-dash.co.uk) Saneyes who is a french producer for orignal inhabitants has been networking with us and now we are extending plans to collaborate for autumn 2013. Events / art / music & Social change organisation Nomadic wax from USA have invited us on incredible international shows and organised parts of our tours at events like SXSW and trinity festival whilst also producing our song Suffer No more. Each collab had been home grown, built on genuine love and friendship and indignous soundwaves is what it is because of all our joint efforts and commitment for something different & uplifting.

3-Are you working in a new mixtape right?

Yes, it’s called mother tongue. Mother Tongue is a reflection of culture, color’s, pattern, people across the earth uniting, the places we call home, our language, our parents and grandparents language, the struggle, that source which connects us all.  The project will hopefully see an international collaboration mixtape with many inspiring artist features and more.

4-Can you tell us about something of the history in the making of the new video Senses?

Sure, Senses is a song about living in the present and enjoying life to the fullest. As this was the concept we knew connecting with our environment & people on a deeper level was important! We spent time in Mexico recently and visited a beautiful place called Tepotzlan. Where we filmed our video whilst travelling there from Mexico City. We were in a group of 10 people and it was warm, vibrant and colorful with movement and great atmosphere.

Mohammed and the film director Cambio discussed ideas and as we walked, jumped on buses & trains, climbed mountains and sung – Cambio filmed us in real time- motion.

Bocafloja & Native Sun

5-Can you tell us something about your collaboration and video “Keep it movin” with Bocafloja?

Mohammed Yahya: Working with Bocafloja was a great honour and experience, he is a very talented lyricst and a very humble soul which made the whole working process very organic.

The song was produced by a mutual friend and very talented producer called Jim B,  we all wanted to shoot a video for the track and since Bocafloja was coming to London to work on a few projects including a couple of shows with us it made sense for us to shoot it then, we decided to collaborate with Globalfaction who had previously shot all our videos from our album.
Through the video we wanted to represent the struggle of working class  people in low paid jobs but encourage the hunger to dream and ambition to strive for a better future.

6-How was the connection with Bocafloja and Mexico?

Mohammed Yahya: Boca has a collective of artists called QuilomboArte who regularly put out great music and do edutaining events, Boca invited us to tour with him and the rest of the crew as they were celebrating the 8th anniversary of QuilomboArte.
It was a great experience and we were deeply touched by the love and reception we received from the Mexican community.

7-What changes can you see in the actual music about the digital media and the liberation of tracks via internet? What do you think about Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Ustream and other free media devices?

Mohammed Yahya: I think that having digital stores facilitates the interaction between the artist and listener, one can record a song in one day, upload it and once he informs his audience that the song is available listeners from anywhere in the world will have immediate access to the song.

The negative aspect in that is that music can be easily leaked and this often affects record sales.

8-What do you remember about the hiphop/afrosoul/ scene in the beginning in Mozambique?

Mohammed Yahya: I left Mozambique when I was only 2 so I cant comment on the Hip Hop scene at its beginning stages, however I can say that there are some amazing artists  there who I truly admire for their powerful messages and courage to criticize the continuous corruption that exists in the country.
I would recommend artists such as Azagaia and Iveth.

9-Do you listen latin hip hop music?

Mohammed Yahya: I’ve always been inspired by Latin rappers, being Mozambican and having Portuguese as my first Language has created that relationship for me, its always an inspiration to see Latin rappers succeed, I currently listen to a few Spanish speaking Hip Hop artists such as Bocafloja from Mexico and Hache from Dominica Republic, a few Portuguese speaking artists such as Valete, Sam The Kid, and a the ones mentioned before but I’m always open to be introduced to more.
Growing up I always loved Latino Rappers such as Big Pun and members of the Terror Squad.

We recently met Cuban Linx whilst we were doing a radio interview in Washington DC and it was a real honour to build with him.

10-What music do you like or recommend of your city?

Sarina: i love so many sounds from London - Bugz in the Attic, 4 Hero , Electro Music im a fan of Floating Points, Fatima from Eglo records, I would recommend UK artists like United Vibrations, Electric Jalaba, Submotion Orchestra, Laura Mvula, Vula, Eska &TY to check out, There are so many incredible artists in the Uk.

11-What are your inspirations in this 2013?

Mohammed Yahya: To continue creating high standard and good quality art that has a powerful message.
We intend of doing a few more International tours across Europe and releasing a few more videos.

12-What are the best places you have alive show done?

Mohammed Yahya: I think that some of our best shows were in Sudan, Mexico and parts of U.S.

13-Maybe a 2013 tour in southamerica?

Yes, this is something which we have in our Plans hopefully to travel to South & central America to places like Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Cuba and continue to share our music to new areas of the world, this is a great opportunity as an independent group to ask the community of South America to reach out to us via our email nativesunmuzik@googlemail.com for bookings if they want to see Native Sun in their town or area. We very much love building, networking and connecting with communities, so hopefully sooner than later we say.

14-We have one funny question for everybody: What do you have in your bag/backpack (it means “Moochila” in spanish)?

Sarina: I have my new 650D cannon camera as im learning to take photos, fashion and capture life and people as much as i can, what a beautiful world it can be from our senses.

Mohammed Yahya: I have my headphones, 3 different books to read whenever I have time, a Native Sun CD and a copy of our P.A. CD too.

15-We invite NATIVE SUN to write a few words to your fans in the world and fans in our Moochila programme.

(sarina) To our peoples i say maintain strength & courage in your heart to nurture the beat to your dreams which becomes the drum through your body you must allow to move, make u dance to life and keep you inspired. Our time here is precious #stay inspired & always be you
