1- What are your feelings about your new album "Monoswezi Yanga”?
We have good feelings about the new album, both because we like it, and it is something different than our previous album “The Village”. Monoswezi Yanga is more produced in a way, more instruments and arrangements, as “The Village” was more like an acoustic live feeling, more like a jazzrecording.
2- What represent World Music Ntwork Riberboat for Monoswezi?
They have been fantastic for us! Just having people working for the album, promoting it and everything is such a luxery! A lot of things has happened for us since we are on Riverboat, so we are very greatful for that!
3- Can you tell us about your fantastic new video "Matatya"? We loved it!
We were playing at the Penang Island Jazzfestival in Malaysia, and we had some free time and got some people working for the festival to record the video in the tropical space garden there, some parts are from a workshop we did there the same afternoon. It was all very funny and quicly done.
4- You have shows in Norway and Stockholm right? You will go to Africa again? We can join to Monoswezi trips? :)
We mostly play in Norway and Sweden this year, but we will be playing at the Latitude festival in Suffolk UK in July. Maybe we will go back to Africa next year. Sure you can join!! Harare Zimbabwe is fantastic, the atmosphere, the music, people, everybody should go there!
5- How do you feel when you realize that you are performing alive in diverses places around the world? How many cities do you know for Monoswezi?
Its is very nice that is is possible to play this music arround the world, and that people seams to enjoy it! I remeber when we were playing in Malaysia I was thinking: “Here am i from Norway playing traditional music from Zimbabwe in Malaysia, and people seams to enjoy it, strange but very nice!! |
6- Can you tell us something about the plural indentity and music legacy of Monoswezi band members?
We all come from different backgrounds musically, but i guess we share some of the same thoughts about music and playing together in a group. Its strange, but somethimes i can feel that i have more in common with a person from the oposite side of the world, then the neighbour next door.
7- What are your inspirations right now?
I am listening much to Thomas Mapfumo and traditional music from Zimbabwe, Banda Linda music from Centra African republic, music from Ethiopa, Mali and north Africa, middle east and sufi music from Pakistan like Nusrat Fated Ali Kahn etc in addition to Jazz
8- Do you listen music from south and central america?
I have been listening to music from Brazil, bozza, sergio mendes, gilberto, jobim, samba, forro, and ofcourse tango from Argentina, and cuban music. But I guess in general that this is the part of the world i know the least about musicaly, so will have to check out more here when time says hello!
9- Maybe a southamerica tour 2015/2016?
We hope! That would have been fantastic! but dont know were to start.. I have never been to South or Central America!
10- We have a funny question for everybody, the answer is free of interpretation of course: What do you have in your backpack? (It means Moochila/Mochila here)
I dont have a backpack, beacause i carry my saxophone on my back..So Erik is carrying both his stuff and my things in his backpack, that includes pingpong racket and pingpong balls and a pandeira. Calu has cardboard in his backpack, always readdy to play on it! Even though Hope is the smaalest one, and just have smaal instruments she has the bigest suitcase and have a lot of stuff, so i think she would need a big Backpack so she put her suitcase in it! Putte always travel very light, even if we are away for two weeks, he just have a smaal backpack with him together with his bass. So his answer is everything i need!
